I have always been interested in ideas and actions that are not just time sensitive, but time dependent. Here, viewers must pedal to play around a minute and a half of ‘crash’ animations. Within each animation I've gone in by hand to erase all of the bicycles so that each figure is seen more as floating or bouncing around rather than actually crashing – more like dancing. It was a way for me to get over my own fear of crashing at speed during the first few months that I began racing road bikes. I then used the same technique to draw Baldessari bikes back into archival stock footage - this was my way of sharing the fun of racing. My work has taken many paths over several years, but the principles of play, engineering and drawing found through creating this piece are always with me.
